Who We Are: A Working Mind, based in Cleveland, Ohio, is offering an innovative new program for children and adolescents with working memory and attention deficit disorders. The world's leading universities are making the study of the brain and working memory a top priority. This dedicated research has yielded reliable, substantive results. A Working Mind is committed to making available only programs that are scientifically proven to improve cognitive functioning. Our sole mission is to provide the region with the best fruits of research in cognitive science to help the brain function at its best. The first program we offer is an important new advance in the management of AD/HD and working memory deficits. This intervention was developed by Cogmed at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden (where the Nobel Prize in Medicine is awarded). This Cogmed working memory software training tool for children and adolescents is called RoboMemo. RoboMemo is a set of computer exercises with a proven success rate of 80%! Cogmed developed this unique software based on the basis of its research findings and continues to apply sound research principles to its continued use. Notre Dame University has completed its research and has successfully replicated the training effects published by Cogmed. A Working Mind was selected by Cogmed to bring this exciting new program to our region.
Working Memory and Attention Deficit Disorders: We use our working memory every day to remember what we should do next, to solve problems, and to pay attention. Working memory is the ability to keep information in our mind for a short period of time, while using it to carry out a task. Simply put, it means remembering what to focus on or what to do next. Children with working memory problems find it difficult to plan, start or finish a task. They may also find it difficult to remember what was just said or to remember instructions. Studies show that a deficit in working memory often leads to difficulties in school since it affects both reading comprehension and mathematics. Children and adults with AD/HD often have working memory problems as well.
Signs of a working memory deficit include:
RoboMemo is designed especially for children with attention deficits and working memory deficits. Published studies have demonstrated that increases in working memory can improve the symptoms of children with AD/HD. Improvement is primarily manifested in increased concentration, sustained attention and learning ability. The program is designed to engage even the most inattentive child. Eighty percent of children who have participated in Cogmed's Working Memory Training have shown significant improvement. They are more able to control their impulsive behavior, concentrate, and use complex reasoning to solve problems. After one year 82% of participants think the improvements have either remained the same or have increased. For those who believe additional training would be beneficial, a Booster Program is available. Cogmed's Working Memory Training is safe and effective. It's a scientifically proven educational intervention that empowers the child.
