Working Memory and Attention Deficit
Disorders:
Working Memory has been called The "Search Engine of the Brain"! We use our working memory every day to remember what we
should do next, to solve problems, and to pay attention. Working memory is
the ability to keep information in our mind for a short period of time, while
using it to carry out a task. Simply put, it means remembering what to
focus on or what to do next. Individuals with working memory problems find it
difficult to plan, start or finish a task. They may also find it difficult
to remember what was just said or to remember instructions.
The good news is that working memory can be trained and
improved by using a Cogmed Working Memory Training Program. The program is based on strong scientific research and
it is done in the convenience of your own home under the
supervision of a qualified Cogmed Coach.

Signs of a working memory deficit include:
-
Concentration problems
-
Being easily distracted
-
Problems starting activities and carrying them to
completion
-
Forgetting instructions
-
Forgetting homework, books, instructions
-
Daydreaming instead of listening during school
-
Concentrating for sustained
periods of time
-
Tracking multiple tasks and
prioritizing them
-
Following instructions like
driving directions
-
Reading comprehension
What is Cogmed Working Memory Training and How Does it Work?
Cogmed Working Memory Training is designed especially for
individuals with attention deficits and working memory deficits. Studies
consistently show that most people with attention deficits also have a working
memory deficit. That holds true for attention problems due to ADHD,
traumatic brain injury or normal aging. It is also true for milder
concentration problems.
8 out of 10 users
who complete training show measurable results. They are more able to control impulsive
behavior, concentrate, and use complex reasoning to solve problems. One
year after training 82% of participants indicated improvements have either remained the
same or
have increased. For those who believe additional training would be
beneficial, a "Booster" Program is available.
Cogmed's Working
Memory
Training is safe and effective. There are scientifically proven training
programs for all age groups from age 4 up to 99+!
The Cogmed Working Memory Training Programs
-
The Cogmed Working
Memory Training is a set of computerized exercises, using the age appropriate
Cogmed software with support from a Cogmed-qualified coach.
-
Training is
typically done at home and takes five weeks, up to 45-60 minutes a day, five
days a week (25 training sessions).
-
The exercises
require the trainee to remember a sequence of numbers, letters, or small lamps
lighting.
-
The exercises
become increasingly challenging as the program progresses, but are calibrated to
accommodate each individual's level of progress.
-
At the start of
training the coach conducts an initial interview with the client (adult) or
training aid (for children) to describe exactly what is involved and what you
can expect at each step.
-
Each day when the
training is finished, the results are automatically sent to the coach via the
Internet.
-
Weekly telephone
contact by the coach to review progress and discuss any potential issues serves
to optimize the training experience.
-
The coach monitors
progress and provides support and encouragement.
-
An interview is
conducted at the completion of the program where an overall review of progress
is measured and reviewed.

Cogmed JM
for pre-school age children. Younger children use their working memory for
a number of things, such as focusing on and following instructions, and
remaining seated to complete independent activities. (Click on the picture

Cogmed RM
is for school age children. Working memory is crucial for children and
adolescents in school and socially. Reading, solving math problems,
planning, and following a conversation all rely on working memory. (Click
